Microgreens: A Healthy Treasure Trove That’s Easy to Grow at Home
Microgreens are young edible plants with their first true leaves, packed with record amounts of nutrients and minerals. These tiny sprouts can be grown from almost any variety of vegetables and greens. While microgreens trays can be found in many supermarkets today, it’s much better for your health and enjoyment to grow them yourself at home – it’s simple, economical, and fascinating!
It’s really easy! Follow these steps:
Prepare a container and a growing mat.
Use any plastic trays with edges, such as fruit or vegetable packaging or disposable tableware. Place a special growing mat inside.
Moisten the mat.
Use a spray bottle to soak the mat with water, allowing it to expand slightly. Avoid overwatering – the mat should be moist but not submerged. Alternatively, soak the mat in water or a nutrient solution, then wring it out before placing it in the container.
Evenly distribute the seeds.
Sow the seeds densely and evenly on the moist mat surface.
Moisten the seeds.
Gently spray the seeds with water using a spray bottle. At this stage, it’s important to keep the seeds moist by watering at least once a day.
Create dark conditions for germination.
Place the trays with seeds in a dark location at a temperature of 18–22°C (64–72°F). Check and moisten the substrate daily to keep it damp throughout germination.
Move to light when seeds sprout.
Once 90–100% of the seeds have sprouted, revealing roots and the first stems, place the trays on a windowsill, balcony, or under LED lights. Avoid direct sunlight, especially in summer, to prevent overheating.
Water the microgreens regularly.
During active growth, the plants consume the most water. Water them 1–2 times a day, ensuring the substrate doesn’t dry out. Remember, the sprouts are delicate at this stage, like little children.
Harvest the microgreens when they reach a height of 5–7 cm (2–3 inches) and have their first leaves, usually in 7–14 days. Carefully cut the stems, leaving the roots intact so the plants can produce a second crop in a few weeks.
For maximum freshness, harvest just before use. If storage is needed, keep microgreens in a glass container.
For convenient and natural growing, we recommend 100% linen mats. They are perfect for creating a healthy environment for your plants. Choose natural simplicity for growing microgreens at home!
